I’m in the latest CDQ!

When I think of career milestones, one that jumps to mind is being featured in Character Design Quarterly. Since I was a baby digital artist, dreaming of working in the animation industry (well, that changed, for the best, I think, seeing the state of the market), I looked at this magazine with a mixture of reverence and desire, for I so wished to be able to master the secrets of character design. Fast forward to 2026, while I don’t think I’ve mastered ALL OF character design, I’m happy to share I’ve apparently made some progress.

My tutorial in this issue of CDQ focuses on my creative process when given a prompt of 3 words (Nature, Tiny, Party) - which became ‘The Tiny Tea Party’. The process focuses on the very early stages of writing, sketching, doodling, scrapping and rebuilding the character’s backstory, shape, quirks, poses… all that makes a character memorable and appealing.
